I have just installed and setup a dev site for
Joomla 1.5 Joomla 1.7 and Moodle 2.1.2 using the latest Beta of Joomdle v.6 (I think) and all I can say is WOW. A very nice integration! It can be used to pull events, course info, assignment due dates, and much more right into Joomla. It was fairly easy to setup by following the directions, but be careful as there are LOTS of steps! We plan on updating our Joomla to version 1.7 in the near future so I am going to hold off on adding this to our production server.
I did not use Joomdle with Jomsocial as of yet. Just regular Joomla and Moodle. I have spent some time using Jomsocial on the demo site and I am not so sure any more if it will be what we are looking for. For one, if we allow all students to go on so they can “friend” teachers and join groups how will we police their activity to make sure it is on the up and up? How do we handle parents? Do we allow email registration for them and allow access? how do they track the teachers posts? Currently using wordpress they get emails every time a teacher makes a new post.
Jomsocial in theory seems like the ideal tool for a web 2.0 communication tool. In practice it may open up a can of worms for k12 users.
